Andre Breton was the French founder of surrealism, a revolutionary movement which began in the 1920s aiming to blur the lines between reality and dreams, allowing free-form expression of ideas. He moved away from Dadaism, which itself began during World War One as an irrational, nonsensical expression of anti-war rhetoric.

André Breton was the founder of Surrealism and his Surrealist Manifestos still live on to this day. The First Manifesto of Surrealism, “dealt with the psychic origins of the poetic image rather than with painting,” and the Second Manifesto of Surrealism, “designated each creative individual to search for the ‘state of mind in which life and death, reality and André Breton was born in Tinchebray and was studying to be a doctor when he was drafted in 1915. The period of World War I was extremely important for Breton in orienting his career. Already interested in poetry, he met the writers Louis Aragon and Philip Soupault while in the army. Unlike many examples of such works, the participants of Tate’s Cadavre exquis of c.1930 are known from an inscription on the reverse of the sheet, in André Breton’s hand, identifying them as Breton himself, the artist Valentine Hugo, the surrealist poet Paul Eluard and Eluard’s partner Nusch. a French writer and poet.
